Led by a strong defensive effort and a season high 14 points from sophomore Michael Everett, Bishop Ireton stopped St. Mary’s of Annapolis 48-35 Saturday afternoon at Father Godley Gymnasium.

The Cardinals used a smothering defense early, holding the visiting Saints to only 3 points in the game’s opening period, and never gave the MIAA school much hope of a road win on their visit to Alexandria Saturday.

Bolting to a 10-3 advantage after one, the Cardinals used turnovers and a quick transition game to keep the Saints on their heels while rolling into intermission with a 30-16 advantage.

Nine Cardinals got in the scorebook for Ireton, including junior Jeremiah Brooks with 10 and Nick Schmelzer with 6pm who headed into the game’s final stanza leading 38-23.  Coach Neil Berkman cleared the bench in the fourth and Ireton enjoyed a home win, their first since a December 13th win over Trinity Christian.

Good Counsel visits the Cardinals, who improved to 5-11 on the year, Tuesday at 7:30pm.
